Semi-rimless eyeglasses have a frame over the top/ bottom part of the frame, and a string holding up the top/bottom part of the lens.

The lenses become part of the frame structure and so the lenses must be tough and strong to put up with this extra work. As a result, regular plastic lenses are not recommended in a Semi-rimless eyeglass frame.  Polycarbonate, Trivex, or high index lenses recommended to be used for semi-rimless eyeglasses.
