Protective Eyewear Construction
What are the characteristics of good protective sports eyewear? Both frame and lens must be made of a high impact material. Sport lenses should be made of a polycarbonate material that can withstand great force, yet are thin and light. They also offer protection from the sun's harmful UV rays, an important consideration for athletes playing outdoor sports. Polycarbonate lenses are available for almost any kind of vision correction, and some are even polarized or photochromic. A photochromic lens is ideal as some sports are played inside and outside.
The sport you play can make a huge difference in the kind of protection you need. Basketball, baseball, soccer, footbal and racquet sports are a common source of eye injuries, mainly from balls and racquets hitting the eye at very high speeds. Remember, everyday glasses don't provide enough protection from impact. For most sports, you should wear polycarbonate goggles. Polycarbonate is very resistant to impact, so it's the only reasonable choice in sports where your eye might encounter a ball, racquet, finger, etc.
Also protective eyewear isn't just for athletes. Every day activities, from lawn mowing to woodworking projects, are areas where eye protection is just as important as playing soccer.
